In view of the increase in onion prices in the country, the government has decided to sell onions at the rate of Tk 35 per kg to TCB card holders in Dhaka city. This program will start from tomorrow Monday.
Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) said in a press release on Sunday, considering the bad onion season in the light of the past few years, onions will be sold to the card-holding consumers of Dhaka metropolis from tomorrow Monday.
A consumer can buy a maximum of two kg of onion at the fixed price.
One crore low-income families in the country are TCB card holders. Among these, the card holders who are in Dhaka city, will be given two kg of onion per month at a subsidized price.
TCB information officer. Humayun Kabir said that the onion sales program will be expanded to other parts of the country outside Dhaka city. But that will be mainly subject to the availability of imported onions.
Sugar, soybean oil and lentils are commonly sold among TCB cardholder households. Rice was also sold in some months. In this system, card holders can buy a certain amount of products at a lower price than the open market.
According to TCB, considering the lean period (shortage of onions in the country) like the last few years, onions will be sold to the card-holding consumers of Dhaka city from tomorrow Monday. The consumer price of onion per kg is Tk 35.
However, it was informed in the notification that these onions will be supplied after coming to the country.
Officials related to TCB said that consumers will get onion along with rice, dal and oil from this month. Apart from this, the organization has a plan to sell onions through trucks in open market in Dhaka.
At present, domestic onion is being sold at Tk 90 to Tk 100 and imported onion at Tk 70 to Tk 75 per kg in the capital
